This regional service makes it easier for residents of member communities to properly manage toxic waste. If your town is not listed contact Devens HHW to find out how your town can be a member too!  

Current list of towns: Ashby-Ayer-Bolton-Clinton-Devens-Groton-Harvard-Lancaster-Littleton-Lunenburg-Pepperell-Shirley-Stow-Townsend  

Center is also available to member town businesses that do not exceed DEP’s threshold for Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQGs) and generate less than 220 pounds (approximately 27 gallons) of ignitable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, or hazardous waste or waste oil per month and no acutely hazardous waste. Businesses are required to pre-register via email or phone. Business disposal fees will be based on the materials being managed.

Collection sites at Greenfield Community College (GCC) and Orange Transfer Station

LATEX PAINT IS NOT ACCEPTED AT THIS COLLECTION.

For residents and businesses in the following towns:
Athol, Barre*, Bernardston, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Conway, Deerfield, Erving, Gill, Hawley, Heath, Leverett, Montague, New Salem, Northfield, Orange, Petersham, Phillipston, Rowe, Royalston, Shelburne, Sunderland*, Warwick, Wendell, Whately

*Residents of Barre and Sunderland must pay to participate.

You must PRE-REGISTER to participate. After registering, you will receive a postcard in the mail assigning you a time and giving you directions to the collection site. Please call our office if you haven't received a registration time within seven days of submitting your information. All registration times will be emailed between 9/13 and 9/20.

Businesses will be charged for disposal cost. Call 413-772-2438 for business registration information.

Materials NOT collected: auto batteries, household batteries, fluorescent lights, compact fluorescent lights, mercury thermostats, mercury thermometers. Most town transfer stations accept these items year-round.

FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS* (see below for alternate disposal options), LATEX PAINT, ASBESTOS, GAS CYLINDERS, RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL, EMPTY CONTAINERS FROM HAZARDOUS PRODUCTS, EXPLOSIVES INCLUDING AMMUNITION AND FIREWORKS


*Mercury-containing items, such as thermostats and thermometers, will not be accepted; fluorescent bulbs are not accepted. CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs are accepted at the following locations: Lowe’s Stores; at all District transfer stations (handle carefully and hand to attendant); and Greenfield Transfer Station (handle carefully and hand to attendant). Additionally, mercury-containing items and bulbs are accepted at the Regional Hazardous Waste Collection sites in Colrain and Conway.

There are a couple facilities in the area that resident may bring common household hazardous waste items for disposal. Please check the following locations for collection dates, times, and fees:

NEDT (New England Disposal Technologies): Year-round drop-off and household pickup

NEDT also has a program to pickup your wastes at your home. There is a form on their website for you to get a quote. Look for the "household pick up" tab.
